HOW TO PREVIEW YOUR FONTS-Fonts are typefaces used in your Windows 98 programs. Many applications install a variety of fonts on your computer and once installed, they are available to any Windows application. You can easily preview your fonts without having to format text to see how they look.

Here's How to Preview:
1 - Click the Start button
2 - Select Settings, then Control Panel
3 - Double-click on the Fonts icon
4 - In the window listing all fonts, double-click on any font icon
5 - You will see the selected font and how it looks in various sizes
6 - Click the Print button to print a sample page of that font
HINT: To print samples of several fonts at the same time, hold down the CTRL key while single clicking the font icons you want to print. When you have selected all the fonts you want to print, click the Print button.
NOTE:Make sure you click Done or use the X button after viewing each font. Although Windows appears to remove the last font sample sheet you looked at before displaying the next one, it actually only minimizes the last sample sheet. This means that after a little casual font gazing, these sample sheets start to add up on your taskbar.

Font icons that are marked with "TT" are TrueType fonts, so they will always look better than  the fonts marked with the letter A. "TT" fonts eliminate the jagged edges and make the screen match more closely what comes out of the printer. TrueType fonts do a good job of "scaling" -- smoothly enlarging or shrinking to your chosen type size. Non TrueType fonts don't scale so well -- they only look good in a few set sizes.

HOW TO GET RID OF FONTS YOU DO NOT WANT-- When you install programs onto your Windows 98 computer, the application you are loading often installs fonts into the C:\Windows\Fonts folder. The more programs you install, the more unmanageable this Fonts folder can become. You'll probably never use most of these fonts, which take up valuable disk space and clog the Font menus of other Windows applications, making it harder to find the fonts you DO want to use. Some Internet sites also load fonts on your computer so it is good to check your fonts periodically even if you don't add new programs or don't think fonts are being installed. Too many fonts will slow your computer way down. I never have more than125 fonts on my computer. If I need a special font, I install it as needed, and I do a lot of graphics.

Do the Following to Remove Fonts:

1 - Click the Start button.
2 - Choose Settings/Control Panel.
3 - In the Control Panel window, double-click the Fonts folder.
4 - Find the fonts you want to remove and double-click on its icon to preview the font to make sure that this is the font you wish to discard.
5 - When you're sure the font is one you want to delete, close the
preview window and press the Delete key on your keyboard. Confirm the deletion.
6 - Repeat the steps above for other unwanted fonts.
which you, your programs or some
WARNING:Do not remove any of the following fonts!
- Times New Roman
- Arial
- Courier New
- System
- Symbol
- Wingdings
- Any font whose name begins with "MS"
- Any font whose name begins with the name of another software manufacturer (for example, "LotusWP Times")

HOW TO INSTALL A FONT FROM A PROGRAM CD-Instead of installing all the fonts with each new program, I only install the fonts as I want to use them. Many fonts are very close in style but have different names. The following is a way to install the fonts as needed. You can also use this method to view the fonts on the program CD before installing.

Do the Following to Install Fonts:

1 - Click the Start button.
2 - Choose Settings/Control Panel.
3 - In the Control Panel window, double-click the Fonts folder.
4 - On the File menu select Install New Font
5 - An "Add Fonts" dialog box pops up
6 - Select drive where font/CD is located, e.g. D: for CD-Rom drive.
7 - Then open up the folder where the fonts are
8 - Windows will then show a list of all the fonts
9 - Make sure the box next to "Copy fonts to Fonts Folder" is checked
10-Then  select the font/fonts you want installed and click OK
HINT: On most program disks there is a fonts folder. But on some you must go searching. Try opening different folders. Windows will then search the folder for fonts and let you know if there are any.
HINT: To select more than one font-After you have selected the first font, hold down the CTRL key as you click on the other fonts that you want.

HOW TO REMOVE JUNK FILES-Many of the junk files are automatically removed when the computer shuts down, but some do stay on and should be manually removed. The easiest way to remove most of them is to use the Disk Cleanup utility that comes with Windows. But this does not clean up all of the junk files so I will explain how to locate some of them yourself. Junk files not only take up hard drive but also cause your computer to slow down.

How to Use Disk CleanUp:

1 - Click the "Start" button
2 - Select Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk CleanUp
3 - A dialog box opens up asking which drive to clean-generally it is the "C" drive but if you
have more than one drive or partitions it may be different.
4 - Windows will then search the drive/ drives for Temporary Internet Files, Temporary
     Windows/Program Files and Recycle Bin
5 - A Dialog box will tell you how much space you can recover by removing these items.
5- Click OK and items will be removed
HINT: This utilty does not remove Cookies and sometimes does not remove all of the Temporary Files. To do a complete cleanup manually follow the next instructions.

How to Manually Remove Junk Files:

1 - Double-click My Computer
2 - Select Programs >Windows Explorer
3 - Place the cursor on the plus sign next to the
Windows folder and Click to show files
4 - Then place cursor and Click on Cookies folder
5 - All the Cookies will be displayed
6 - On the EDIT menu click-Select all
7 - Then click DELETE
8 - Do steps 5-7 for the Temporary Folder and Internet Temporary Folder
HINT: Before deleting Cookies make sure you do not need them. Soon I will have more information about Cookies.
For now if you have questions please email me.
HINT: When you use Windows 98 Explorer, you'll see that some folders have a plus sign ( + ) or a minus sign ( - ) next to them. Click the plus sign to expand the folder one level and click the minus sign to collapse the branch.
HINT:
You may not be allowed to DELETE all the files, so just Delete the ones you can.

HOW TO EMPTY RECYCLE BIN-When you delete files, as a rule they are not taken off your hard drive, but are sent to the Recycle Bin. If you do not remove them from the Recycle Bin they will still be taking up space. And slowing down your computer. The Recycle Bin does not automatically empty when you turn off your computer. You must remove them yourself or use Disk CleanUp to do so.

The Following are Two Ways to Empty the Recycle Bin, but there are others:

1 - Double Click on the Recycle Bin Icon on your Desktop
2 - A window opens up displaying the files in the Recycle Bin
3 - Click Empty Recycle Bin
HINT: If you have accidentally Deleted a file, follow the same procedure above, then select the file/files you want to restore and Click Restore Files.

1 - Right Click on the Recycle Bin Icon
2 - Select Empty Recycle Bin
HINT: Only do this if you know which files are in the Recycle Bin and you know you want to Delete them permanently.

HOW TO DEFRAG YOUR HARD DRIVE: Fragmentation occurs when files aren't stored on a drive in contiguous areas. Windows 98 may need to split files as you work with them and store pieces in different drive sections. This slows your computer's operation, since files must be reassembled before they are displayed again. The same is true of program files; if they're scattered all over the drive, they will load more slowly.

Win98's Disk Defragmenter utility contains an option to not only piece together fragmented files, but to arrange program files so that they will launch faster.

There are Three Important Things To Do Before Running Defrag.
1 -  Clean up the hard drive!
See above instructions for getting rid of junk files

2 - Turn off your screensaver!
       To do this:

3 - Disable your Anti-virus and unload programs in the System Tray (the icons next to the
time/clock on your Start up bar).
To do this:

You Are Now Ready to Defrag:

1 - Click the "Start" button
2 - Select Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Defragmenter
3 - Click the "Settings" button
4 - Check the "Rearrange program files so my programs start faster" option
5 - Click OK to start defragmentation

And off it goes. Now, if you want a real thrill, you can select show details and then legend, and you can watch your harddrive being defragged. It's  like watching a Pac-Man video game. When it's done, close it and go do some surfing!
Don't forget to turn your Anti-virus  and Screensaver back on.

HINT:If while running Defrag, you get an error message saying it cannot run Defrag due to errors, you must go run ScanDisk. Defrag will run smoothly and efficiently immediately after running ScanDisk. Soon I will have more information on Scan Disk. For now if you have questions please email me.

Hands Off During Defrag:Depending on your disk capacity and performance, how much data are on it and how fragmented it is, Disk Defragmenter can literally take hours.

If you try using the computer while the utility is defragging your hard disk, you'll only slow the process down. In fact, if you set Disk Defragmenter to show details - and you keep an eye on the status line as you work in another program - you'll see that every time you do anything that writes a change to disk, Disk Defragmenter will report that the disk's contents have changed. And it will restart the defragging process all over.

HOW TO CONVERT TO FAT32:Windows 98 uses a new file management system called FAT32. What does this means to you? When you use a disk drive for file and program storage, the disk must be formatted. Formatting is preparing the disk drive to accept data by creating "clusters", the smallest unit of allocated space for saving a file.

Under that old FAT16 system, a 1GB hard drive had a cluster size of 32K (32,000 characters). If you saved a file with just one character in it, the system would still assign a 32-byte cluster to that file, which is a tremendous waste of space! This wasted space is known as "slack" and 30-40% of all hard drive space is consumed by slack.

With the new FAT32 file system, the cluster size of a 1 GB hard drive is only 4K (4,000 characters). Although there is still some slack, you can see that there is much less, effectively making your hard drive more efficient and giving you the ability to store more information.

NOTE: Be sure to record how much available disk space you have before you start this utility and check it again after it's run to see how much extra room you'll have on the disk. You'll be surprise to say the least.

Here's How to Convert your Hard Drive to Fat32:

1 - Choose START/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Drive Converter
2 - Click the NEXT button on the Drive Converter Wizard Welcome screen
3 - The conversion utility scans your system for applications that may be incompatible with
FAT32. A list of programs that the Drive Converter feels will be incompatible is displayed
so that you may decide whether or not to continue.
4 - The wizard warns you that the system will be restarted and prompts you to save anything
     you may be working on.
5 - The program will prompt you to specify which drive to convert; only one drive at a time
can be converted. Most systems only have a single hard drive.
6 - The converter Wizard also suggests you back up your files. This is purely a personal
choice and depends on how much confidence you have in Microsoft.
7 - When you give the system the go ahead, your PC will be rebooted and the conversion
will take place. A screen is displayed advising you of the utility's progress. When
completed, your machine will automatically restart. Check the available disk space to see
how much slack you have recovered.

THE NEW TIP TO HELP YOUR COMPUTER RUN FASTER-This tip helps many systems to run faster, your mileage may vary.

1 - Click Start >Settings >Control Panel.
2 - Double click the System listing.
3 - Click Performance tab.
4 - Click File System button.

Look for Typical role of this computer under Settings and you'll probably find your system is set up as a "Desktop computer." Change the setting to "Network server" and reboot your system. This change dedicates more RAM memory to your disk cache, instead of accessing your hard drive as often.
NOTE: Systems with 32+ MB of RAM will benefit more from this change.
